Avian ventriloquists

Lately, blackbirds, miners and currawongs have taken to sitting on our chimneypots and singing down into our chimneys. It's so strange when we're in our bedroom or study and it sounds as though there's a little bird chattering away in the fireplace!

Autumn

Autumn in Melbourne is magnificent. For a couple of weeks we've had gloriously clear, sparkling-sunshiney days interspersed with crisp moonlit nights and chilly mornings. Crunchy autumn leaves provide childish delights as they pile up along the roads and footpaths, perfect for shuffling through noisily on the way to work.

Now, as I get ready to bundle myself off to bed, fat raindrops are beating out a syncopated rhythm on our tin roof and the garden is soaking up the welcome rain.

This is contentment.

Northern lights

What is it about Scandinavia that seems so enticing and bewitching?

Maybe it's the light ....?

Perhaps it's the romantic landscapes .... the traditions of visiting summer houses, garden plots and rambling near the sea or in the woods ....

Maybe the charm lies in a simple, uncluttered architectural and design aesthetic .... or the fairy-tale quality of many Scandinavian images ...

I don't know what it is, but I know I've always been smitten. You can find some lovely links down there on the right (under the heading Northern Lights), or check out a few of these pretty posts to see what I mean:

Miso

Here in Melbourne we're really lucky to have a vibrant, diverse art culture. 21-year-old Miso (a.k.a. Stanislava Pinchuk) creates beautiful street art that often captures the spirit of the Ukraine, her home country.

An inspiring young talent, Miso has already held a solo exhibition, completed a book for Thames and Hudson, and her street art has been bought and archived by the National Gallery of Australia.

It's fun discovering street art in quiet city laneways...

(Melbourne municipal cleaners made a bit of a blunder a few weeks ago, unwittingly painting over a treasured artwork by Banksy in Melbourne. It seems it's happened before.)

In stitches

.... an entire day of crafting, chatting, laughing and eating with 60 fabulously crafty bloggers from around the country (and even overseas) - now that was just what I needed to lift my spirits!

I had fun today, and when I finally curl up in bed tonight I'm sure my head will still be swimming with images of delicious fabric colour combinations, amazing stitching skills, gorgeous designs, delightful softies, and the warmth created from the collective enthusiasm of such a diverse group of creative women.

Thank you so much to everyone who made today so much fun (especially Sheridan, who orchestrated the whole darn thing!).

Blob

I'm tired.
When I saw this picture of a blobfish last night, I thought that's exactly how I feel!

5-minute distraction - robots again!

OK - you know I love paper stuff, design and robots. So when you put them all together it has to be a good thing. I'm taking a 5-minute break from my work to bring you these little guys, made by Juan Diego:

..... and speaking of robots, I just remembered the wonderful Tweenbot project. Did you see it when I posted it last year?

I also found this photo by Willycoolpics on Flickr. It's titled 'Rock, paper - hey wait a minute ....!'

*wink!*

Tattooed darlings

Via this blog, I found a rockin' Adelaide make-up artist who seems to like the artwork of Angelique Houtkamp.

You can visit her here.

I'm not so sure about Angelique any more. I think I might be a bit 'over' her drawings, but I like this make-up homage.

Scurry scurry scurry!

*Sigh*

It's one of the busiest times of year again for me and I'm feeling a little swamped. I had grand plans to do several more hours of work when I got home this evening, but I'm so tired I barely managed to answer a few emails ...

So for the moment I think I'll just post this lovely portrait. I like the intensity of the little rat's expression, 'cause it mirrors the way I feel.

I hope this week is treating you well!
