Spies in the sky

Did you know that some of the most important German reconnaissance work of the Second World War was undertaken by pigeons? The poor little guys lugged chunky spy cameras around as they flew across key landscapes and cityscapes, snapping photos for the government's war strategists.

What strange and remarkable photos! I have a bit of a soft spot for rock doves (a.k.a. pigeons) despite their reputation as 'flying rats' in urban environments. I suppose these handsome fellas were unwittingly 'flying rats' of a different sort!

Hope you're continuing to make a good recovery from your knee surgery.
